Behind the Scenes with Volunteer Brooke

by Victoria Scalo

1. What interested you in joining NoSilence NoViolence as a volunteer?

I am a survivor of Domestic Violence and NSNV provided me with life-saving resources when I needed them most. I attribute a significant amount of my healing and transformation to my extremely positive experience with NSNV. I am honored to now be a part of this wonderful organization helping other survivors heal and move out of the darkness and into the light.  As a volunteer, I am reminded of how far I have come from the suffering and the darkest time in my life. I am forever grateful to have made it out and to be able to help other survivors heal and see their beauty, power, magnificence, and to show them that there is nothing to be ashamed of. I cannot imagine how different my life could have been without the support of NSNV and I hope I can provide the same beacon of hope for survivors.

 2. What kind of work do you do as a volunteer group facilitator?

I have had the honor of giving back to NSNV for many years. My role has included: leading trauma-informed yoga at survivor healing retreats, creating and leading a Yoga Therapy for Survivors of Domestic Violence Program: “From Victim to Survivor to Thriver,” facilitating a Healthy Relationships Group as well as leading the Support and Empowerment Group for Survivors of Domestic Violence. The Support and Empowerment Group for Survivors of Domestic Violence includes yogic practices, breathwork, mindfulness, and other techniques helping to support post traumatic growth and empower survivors on their healing journey.

 3. Are there any contributions that you are especially proud of?

The deeply meaningful testimonials I have received from survivors of how I have helped them heal and find joy in their life brings me to a state of eudaimonic happiness that cannot be described in words. It is a happiness steeped in deep purpose and gratitude. The post traumatic growth and healing I have witnessed through the Yoga Therapy Program: From Victim to Survivor to Thriver is ineffable and so close to my heart, as Yoga helped me to heal tremendously. I hope these programs can continue to be a ripple effect of hope and healing for survivors and I am honored to be a part of this.

4. What would you say to those looking to support NSNV as a volunteer?

As volunteers, we have the power to help transform the lives of so many survivors.  I know this based on my own experience as a survivor and now as a hope provider for survivors at NSNV. The eudaimonic happiness in volunteering by serving survivors in need is deeply meaningful and impactful.
